What’s an EPISCOPAL?

Good question.  It’s the Greek word for Bishop.  So we’re a church which has Bishops.  Among other things, this means we observe truly ancient traditions and connections.  Bishops also remind us to God continued movement to incorporate all humanity and creation into the work and transformation of the world.

Is the Episcopal Church similar to the Roman Catholic Church?

Well, sort of.  At our main worship, for example, we always have communion – what Roman Catholics call the Mass.  This is the service, after all, handed down from Jesus through generation to generation of the church.  Like our Roman Catholic brethren, we honor the power and mystery of God as seen in sacramental worship and living.  But there are some differences – i.e., married priests and women priests, to name two of the most noticeable.  learn more about our worship, here.

How is it like other churches?

We’re a kind of bridge church because we are like other churches as well.  We emphasize the Bible and the need for each person to have a personal relationship with God in Christ.  We also have strong lay participation in the church at every level.  See who are the ministers of the church, here.

From where did the Episcopal church come?

Our roots are with the Church of England.  We’re part of the Anglican church.  Travel around the world and you’ll find we’re everywhere.  There are more than 70 million Anglicans.  We also trace our roots back to the early Celtic Christians who developed a unique earthy and vibrant spirituality in those early years of Christianity.  The Episcopal Church in the United States maintains a family-type relationship with all other churches in the world of similar heritage in the Anglican Communion.  Read more about the Episcopal Church, nationally and in Hawai`i, here.

How welcome would I be if I came?

You might be surprised to find out what one of the hallmarks of St. Peter's, and the Episcopal Church, is to share hospitality.  Rather than insisting on common belief, we emphasize common prayer.  We strive to be a most tolerant community with a deep, rich prayer life.  We don’t have lots of rules.  Hesitant to judge others, we want to help people discover just how much God loves them.  You too!  As we say, It's not our house or table, but God's.  And God said, Aloha - come in!
