Making the Visit
Visitation Sunday - July 8, 2007

What’s Happening?

Throughout our community 40 Days of Sabbath, we invite you to take a Sunday to experience another community of faith.

Why Visit?Taking the chance to visit for a Sunday to another church affords several wonderful experiences connected to our community Sabbath.
  • Remember—it allows us to remember the reasons we relish our own community of faith.
  • Remind—it allows us to receive new, or renewed, perspective of what experience others have when joining us at St. Peter’s.
  • Renew—visiting allows us to seek or find information and wisdom about new avenues of ministry and worship which God has possible for St. Peter’s.
What Do We Do?
  • Visit a church which has a ministry or worship experience which intrigues, interests, or impassions you.
  • Go with someone else that can share in perspective and unpacking the experience.
  • Use this guide to focus your visit and reflections. Don’t be afraid to ask questions of someone from the church.
  • Think of your visit like a secret shopper.
  • Read more below for guidelines for making your visit.

During Your Visit

If You're Exploring a Ministry

What to think about...

What is it like being a visitor?

How were you received, welcomed, or cared for?
If not, how does it make you feel?

What marks and demonstrates the style of worship?

Were you helped in “navigating” the service? How?

Was the worship effective for your experience?  Why?

What’s the make-up of the church?
(old, young, ethnic identities)
How are different groups included together?

Does the church have a mission or focus for their ministries?  What do they say it is?

Does the mission show in what they do and share?

What type of sermon or preaching was shared?  Why, or why not, was this effective for you?

What type of learning opportunities does the church offer?
Do these interest you? Why?

How does the church share fellowship?  Were you invited and included?

Are there any printed, communication, or information resources which are noteworthy?  (pick up samples to bring back with you)

What type of facilities do they have for families, children, and youth?
How do the difference generations mingle?

What can we learn from this church?

What does the church make you remember and appreciate about St. Peter’s?

What to ask...

From where did the idea for the ministry emerge?
(an individual in the church, an identified need, etc.)

Who is in charge, supervising, running the ministry?
(staff persons, volunteers, etc.)

What is the purpose of the ministry?
What is it’s mission?
Who’s it for, people inside or outside the church?

What type of response does the ministry receive?
From this community of faith?
From the wider community?

How do people find out about this ministry?

How many people participate as volunteers and leaders?

How many people participate as recipients?

When is the ministry offered/undertake?  (time and location, etc.)

Who did you talk to about the ministry?

How can we learn more?  Who can we contact from the church to learn more?
